This lack of flexibility shows up by way of pathology, for example, carpal tunnel, plantar fasciitis, headaches, back pain, and thoracic outlet syndrome. When practicing Structural Medicine, we're interested in creating a balanced strength to flexibility ratio within the entire body. This will allow one to function optimally with ease. In order to realign one’s structure, we use a variety of methods: Customized postural evaluation, myofascial length testing, soft tissue mobilization, movement, gait analysis, breathing techniques, stress management—to name a few.
Structural medicine is an evaluation and treatment technique that addresses the fascia in our system. Fascia is a connective tissue network that surrounds muscles, bones, blood vessels, nerves and organs. The connective tissue is a wrapping that provides support while ultimately allowing flexibility. This network has the potential to serve us well as it maintains its ability to glide as we move. Alternatively, it becomes shortened and maladaptive as we are susceptible to postural habits, computers, sleeping positions, etc..
